Syphilis cases are rising in Tarrant County. In our practice we’ve diagnosed two new primary syphilis outbreaks.
Tarrant County ranked No. 2 among the nation’s counties in the percentage increase of syphilis cases from 2016 to 2017, according to a recent Health Testing Centers analysis of the 2017 STD Surveillance Report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Syphilis is the great imitator. One of our cases was elusive but we looked for it, tested, and treated.
This disease had nearly been eradicated. We feel like we see more of these and other STI like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes because the fear of aids has died.
Many STI are treatable and rarely cause death but they can be very dangerous in pregnancy and they can cause infertility. It is important to get regular health screenings. Don’t be afraid to talk to your FĒNOM doc if you have any concerns.
